Gasshuku 21st and 22nd July 2001

My first ever Gasshuku and I enjoyed every second of it! Held at Buckmore Park in Chatham, the Saturday consisted of two great classes taken by Shihan, who had flown over from Australia, on basics and kumite. In between there was the chance to go for a dip in the pool or sample the wonderful cuisine(!!) Many then drank the night away to take their minds off the grading on the Sunday, which was preceded by an early morning run and assault course. The class was tougher than ever, but everyone gave 200%. It was a real treat to see the sensei's grade, especially sensei's Richard, Indy and Beej, who were grading for 1st Kyu, Shodan-ho and 1st Dan respectively. The atmosphere was electric as everyone was silent for the amazing displays of kata and then cheered them on during the kumite. Sensei's Richard, Indy and Beej were pummelled into the ground again and again, but kept on getting up, giving it all they had. The presentation was very emotional, with sensei Richard receiving a nice surprise when his outstanding effort meant he was awarded shodan-ho, and sensei Beej rewarded with a standing ovation. Everyone there was in awe of all three sensei's, an inspiration to work hard and never give up. There were other celebrations too, as many others graded, including my sensei, sensei Fran, her son, Mikey, and her sister, Sensei Julia. Well done to everyone who graded, the effort and determination was phenominal - REI.
